Return to Heliopolis — I Rise In Flames Cried the Phoenix

The Return is a passage through the Gates of the Sun, which open on January 2nd at the perihelion — the annually recurring moment in time when Sun and Earth are closest to each other. A large ostrich egg gilded with gold lies in the midst of radiant shards of sun-colored glass, surrounding it like fire, inside the lower section of a small Victorian traveling case. Within the back of the open lid there is a quite large piece of this luminous glass floating over a gold gilded circle of acrylic, embraced by a narrow piece of tin twisted into the form of a cobra. This impressive equipage is presided over by the cast bronze head of an Egyptian Goddess spreading protection over the precious cargo as it sails down the Nile to the Temple of the Sun at Heliopolis, where a ray of its light will ignite the divine fire from which the Phoenix will again be reborn, as it has once every 500 years.
